Converted Driving Trailers of the V sets

On the 15th, I, with a couple of friends chased down V27, a special V set with double converted driving trailers running a 4 car Lithgow service. With the V set retirement and scrapping underway these special carriages are becoming a rarer sight so I thought we should document them in service before they’re all gone.

At the time of filming, V sets have been fully displaced from the CCN line and only run regular services on the BMT, which helped narrow the search area a lot.

Eventually, after deciding it was too boring to just wait at Sydney Terminal, we took a regular V set to Emu Plains, and then headed back toward Penrith where we chanced upon V27 (a double converted) after browsing some fellow transport enthusiasts’ Instagram stories. Big thanks to Kayden Rayward who incidentally posted footage of V27 on the day near Parramatta which greatly helped our search!

Sets with Converted Driving Trailers

  • V21 (DCT9032 & DTD9036)
  • V25 (DET9216 & DCT9039), with DET9216 being a one-of-a-kind former “Contura” car featuring longitudinal seating in the vestibule.
  • V27 (DCT9031 & DCT9040)

And these have single converts:

  • V2 (DCT9042)
  • V18 (DCT9044)
  • V26 (DCT9037)
